Commencement of Manchester University Q-Step Data Fellows

We’re really pleased to introduce the two Data Fellows from the University of Manchester who will begin mapping data covering the Civic University Agreement priorities. Vanessa and Shakira began working with us on July 4th, and will carry out this data visualisation over the course of an 8-week placement, looking into ‘Education & Skills’, and ‘Jobs & Growth’ respectively.

Vanessa, Data Fellow

Hi, my name is Vanessa, and I am a Q-step Data Fellow working with the Civic University Board. I have completed my second year in Economics and Data Analytics, and I'm looking forward to applying the knowledge and skills I learnt throughout my course in a real-world setting. This summer I will be focusing on ‘Education and Skills’, which was identified as one of the 6 key priorities within the Greater Manchester Civic University Agreement. In this project, I will be using higher education data to understand the type of students the universities attract, looking at different characteristics: gender, ethnicity, and disability. The data analysis will drive research on mapping GM and aid in the understanding of the reach and gaps the 5 universities in Manchester have.

Shakira, Data Fellow

Hi, I'm Shakira, and I’ve just finished my second year at the University of Manchester, studying Criminology and Social Statistics. As a Q-Step Data Fellow, I am working on the project "Mapping GM", where I am specifically focusing on ‘Employment and Growth’. This is so we can understand how the universities within Greater Manchester contribute toward economic growth and employment. Within this, I am also looking at the gender, ethnicity and disability breakdown of the staff at the universities - to put into perspective whether employment within Greater Manchester's universities reflect the diverse demographics of people and skills in the area.
